   Bolivia Travel Information

Bolivia is in the middle of South America and is very centrally located.  Bolivia borders five countries in South America.  Despite being surrounded by so many countries, Bolivia has maintained its own identity and is home to some of the most well-preserved ancient ruins in the world.  Traveling to Bolivia is one of the most rewarding cultural experiences. This country has many natural resources including cocoa, oil, and gas. But besides that, this country is one of the few in the world that is still occupied by natives more than settlers.

La Paz was built in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River which runs northwest to southeast.  La Paz sits in the Andes Mountains with an elevation of 11,900 feet above sea level, making it the highest big city in the world. The city spreads over various elevations, making it a dazzling and breathtaking adventure, and the headquarters for exploring Bolivia.

Top Things To Do In Bolivia

For a true Bolivian cultural experience drive out to the Witches Markets which are located on Linares between Sagarnaga and Santa Cruz. This popular tourist’s destination offers stalls of cubbyholes stores selling herbs, dried roots, shrunken llama and oils.  You can also explore the Valle de la Luna area (Moon Valley). Here you can walk through a maze of ravines and pinnacles caused by erosion on the slope of the mountain.  A little further away from the city, you find the historical ceremonial center of Tiahuanaco, which is considered the most important archaeological site in Bolivia.

La Paz is the largest and most modern city of Bolivia. To truly experience the history of La Paz, spend time walking through the main square, Plaza Murillo, named for Pedro Domingo Murrillo who led an unsuccessful revolt against the Spanish, take pictures in front of the Legislative Palace and visit the Mususeo Nacional de Arte at Comercio and Socabaya.  Enjoy spending some time at the El Alto Mercado, a large market stretching for blocks filled with vendor stalls selling all kinds of local goods. For sun and relaxation, head out to the town of Copacabana, located only three hours from La Paz.  This charming town sits on the southern shores of Lake Titicaca.
